Air Filters
Commonly Asked Questions About Air Filters
- How many and what kinds are there? As many as two -- one for the engine and one for the cabin.
- What do they do? Capture airborne contaminants ranging from dirt, sand, and mold spores to pollen, road debris, and even insects. The engine air filter helps keep infiltrates from entering the motor via the air intake. The cabin air filter helps keep pollutants from getting into the heating and air conditioning systems via the ducts and depositing on the vents.
- What are they made of? Either foam, metal, cotton, or synthetic paper. The media is pleated for optimal trapping, it's either flat, circular, or cylindrical by design, and some, you can wash and reuse.
- What are the signs they're going bad? Look for the most obvious: obstructed airflow and clogs, worn or damaged media, and a Check Engine light and/or other warning lights on the dash. You may also notice worsening gas mileage, black smoke in the exhaust, power loss, engine misfires, and other unusual engine noises. You may even have trouble speeding up. Also, listen for whistling and/or other abnormal sounds, plus dirty or stale smells, coming from the cabin's vents.
- When should they be replaced? Once a year, or every 12,000 to 15,000 miles; no more than every 30,000 miles. Otherwise, when you see said symptoms. For more info and instructions, review your owner's manual. It'll have a maintenance schedule with what you need to know. Before ordering new air filters, however, make sure they're genuine.
- Why buy genuine OEM? They're guaranteed compatible with the car or SUV model you drive. The aftermarket can't always make the same promise.
- Where can I order them? Right here at our auto parts store.
