- What are they? The textured surfaces on top of the brake calipers in vehicles with disc brake systems.
- What do they do? Act as a friction-generator between the calipers and the brake rotors. As the latter rub together, they produce the resistance that slows wheels and stops tires.
- What types are there? Organic, ceramic, metallic/semi-metallic, and carbon fiber.
Organic brake pads are dependable, relatively easy on rotors, and inexpensive, and they don't produce much dust, all of which make them great for everyday driving.
Ceramic brake pads are ruggeder, quieter, and their dust doesn't stick to wheels as much, making them ideal for all kinds of weather.
Metallic/semi-metallic brake pads feel firmer overall than other kinds, they work better at high heat, and they withstand brake fade.
Carbon fiber brake pads are the ultimate combo of high-strength and high-temperature-resistant, which help them deliver the best stopping power. - When do you change them? That depends on how and where you drive, but generally, every 40,000 to 50,000 miles.
- What are the signs they may be going bad? It may start to take longer to slow down and stop. One of the worst, however, is grinding sounds. Otherwise, look for warning lights on the dash, worn or damaged pads, and warped or damaged rotors, and listen and feel for whiny and vibrating brakes.
- Why buy genuine OEM? They'll come compatible with your BMW car or SUV model, guaranteed. You may not get the same assurances on the aftermarket.
