Headlights
Commonly Asked Questions About Headlights
- What are their functions? There are three, generally: high beams, low beams, and hazard lights/flashers. High-beam headlights illuminate the road more thoroughly in the dark. Low-beam headlights are for everyday driving when conditions are dim, or visibility is otherwise suboptimal. Hazard lighting or flashers tell other drivers that you're in distress or that there's a dangerous situation nearby. These uses dovetail with other types of lighting, too -- for instance, with fog lights.
- What kind does my vehicle have? Most likely, either halogen, Xenon (also known as high-intensity discharge/HID), or LED. Halogen headlights are the commonest, especially smaller cars. Xenon/HID headlights you can find in the narrower housings of many sports cars. LED headlights are a low-heat and energy-efficient type, and mainstays in newer vehicles.
- Which type is compatible with what I drive? That depends on what your car or SUV came with and what your owner's manual says on the subject.
- When do I replace them? Halogen headlighting, about every two years. Xenon headlighting, approximately every three years. LED headlighting, if the bulbs burn out, or its electronics fail. Before you buy new ones, however, be sure they're genuine.
- Why buy genuine OEM? They'll fit your car or SUV model better than most other aftermarket options. The same goes for all other BMW lighting -- daytime running lights, taillights, brake lights, you name it.
- Where can I order them? Here at our auto parts store.
